Materuni Waterfall & Coffee Trek
Chagga coffee ceremony, a waterfall through the cloud forest, and the best ugali in Tanzania.
The Materuni Waterfall hike is one of the finest single-day walks in the Kilimanjaro region — and it begins at a Chagga coffee farm. Hike through banana groves and cloud forest to a 70-metre waterfall, swim in the pool below, then return for a traditional Chagga lunch and coffee ceremony. No tents. No altitude. Pure forest joy.
The Itinerary
Transfer from Moshi to Materuni Village on Kilimanjaro's southern slope. Begin with a guided coffee farm tour — from bean to cup, learning the Chagga farming method that has sustained these slopes for generations. Trek 3 hours through banana, avocado, and sugarcane farms, then into the forest, to the Materuni Waterfall: 70 metres of clear water falling into a rocky pool. Swim, eat your packed lunch beside the falls, then hike back to the village for a traditional Chagga cooking class and full lunch. Return to Moshi.
