Climbing Kilimanjaro Guide 2026

Everything you need to know to safely reach the summit of Africa's highest peak. Discover expert training tips, what to pack, and how to choose the right operator.

How Hard Is It to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro is often referred to as a "walk-up" mountain. This means that reaching the summit does not require any technical mountaineering skills, ropes, harnesses, or crampons. However, this does not mean the climb is easy.

The primary challenge is the extreme altitude. At 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), the oxygen level at the summit is approximately half of what it is at sea level. The key to success is acclimatization. Climbing slowly ("pole pole"), staying hydrated, and choosing a longer route (7-9 days) significantly increases your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak without severe altitude sickness.

Kilimanjaro Day-by-Day Overview

  • The Lower Slopes (Rainforest)

Your journey begins in dense, humid rainforest. You'll likely encounter monkeys and exotic birds as you hike on muddy trails beneath a thick canopy.

  • The Moorland & Alpine Desert

As you ascend, the trees vanish, replaced by giant lobelias and heather. The air gets noticeably thinner and colder. Here, the focus is on "climb high, sleep low" to help your body adapt.

  • Summit Night (The Arctic Zone)

You usually wake up around midnight to begin the final ascent in freezing temperatures. It is a grueling, steep climb over loose scree in the dark, but reaching Stella Point or Gilman's Point at sunrise makes it all worth it.
